Clear-cutting without additional regeneration treatments can trigger successional setbacks prolonging the expected time to compositional recovery in boreal forests

چکیده
Clear-cutting is one of the most widespread forestry practices used in boreal forests. forests late successional stages could trigger reversion trajectories back toward earlier stages. Such setbacks generate sustainability issues by prolonging expected time to compositional recovery after clear-cutting. This lead overestimation allowable cuts economically important late-successional species if occurrence remains unassessed. Our objective was assess whether clear-cutting without additional regeneration treatments has triggered setbacks. We studied post-clearcut using forest inventory data stands, light conceptual dynamics models. These covered actively managed region Quebec, eastern Canada, which classified into two ecological regions, themselves subdivided (cool–wet) and western (warm–dry) sub regions. half these prolong, at least an century, To prevent species, foresters monitor post-clear-cut were triggered. Post-clear-cut occurred regions where climatic conditions are warmer drier than their counterpart no occurred. Hence, brought on may be exacerbated climate change. Finally, furthering our understanding transformation anthropogenic disturbances will essential insure sustainable practices.

An alternative to clear-cutting in the boreal forest of Alaska: a 27-year study of regeneration after shelterwood harvesting
We present 27-year results from a comparison of clear-cutting and shelterwood harvesting in the boreal forest of Alaska. Three patch clear-cut and three shelterwood units were harvested in 1972; about 100 dispersed white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) leave trees per hectare were retained in the shelterwoods. Units were mechanically scarified and an exceptionally large seed-crop was disper...
متن کاملAlgorithmic Networks: central time to trigger expected emergent open-endedness
This article investigates emergence and complexity in complex systems that can share information on a network. To this end, we use a theoretical approach from information theory, computability theory, and complex networks. One key studied question is how much emergent complexity arises when a population of computable systems is networked compared with when this population is isolated. First, we...
متن کاملPredicting growth response of shrubs to clear-cutting and site preparation in coastal Oregon forests
Cover-projection models were developed based on algebraic difference formulations of an exponential-power function to describe shrub recovery and development patterns after clear-cutting and site preparation. We tested the effect of six treatments on shrub growth patterns by incorporating indicator variables into the rate and shape parameters of the models for salal (Gaultheria shallon Pursh), ...
متن کاملQuantifying the effect of fuel reduction treatments on fire behavior in boreal forests
Mechanical (e.g., shearblading) andmanual (e.g., thinning) fuel treatments have become thepreferred strategy ofmanyfire managers and agencies for reducing fire hazard in boreal forests. This study attempts to characterize the effectiveness of four fuel treatments through direct measurement of fire intensity and forest floor consumption during a single prescribed burn. The treatments included (1...
